Buckeye Billy - Autumn 2006

Although the day was a little cool for Karen and I standing at the finish and registration area, it was a nice day for a run through the woods. This was our first ever Billy Goat event for COO and it turned out pretty well. It would have been nice to get a few more people though.

I set up the courses so that the longer course was the same as the short course, Billy Goat competitors just had to pick up another map at the water/refreshments control for the middle third of the course. So competitors had the option of continuing on the longer Goat or staying on the shorter Kid, or vice versa. No one went from the short to the long but we did have 2 teams registered for the Goat that opted to do the Kid instead.

I mistakenly calculated the climb in feet rather than meters although it is labeled as meters on the clue sheets. Of course Bob Huebner swears that it definitely felt right as meters. Bob did the mapping and field checking for these areas and thinks the base maps might have been missing a few contours. Interestingly he is also the only one to take the other option at each of the split controls.

We had a minor problem for the first two finishers on the Kid, Bob Lindsay and Marek Polinski. When they reached the final control it was missing, so the finish order for the Kid isn't official. I went out and placed a substitute marker and noticed on the way back that one of the white course controls near a trail was also missing. Since both controls were down hill of a deer stand just inside the non-hunting area of the park, I figure the hunter didn't want deer to be scared by the controls.

If anyone is interested in doing detailed field checking to improve our Greal Seal maps, or developing detailed maps of Tar Hollow or Scioto Trails please let me know. I don't want to use Great Seal for the Goat again next year, so our options are to finish the field checking that Bob started of Scioto Trail, or field checkTar Hollow or do a farsta version of a Goat at Alley Park.
