What an interesting day we had orienteering on Sunday, March 29th!

The park ranger showed me several areas of high water early that morning, and we drove across flooded trails. The river had flooded overnight quite far from its banks and muddied-up the terrain for orienteering. Two spots intended for controls were completely under water and near fast-flowing water - no way should a control go there in those conditions. The park ranger ended up closing some trails, and I ended up not putting out all the controls intended for the day!

The other surprise for the day was that we had a MASSIVE turnout for the RED course! Usually this course has very few runners, as it's typically over 5 km long and just really not a great choice the first time trying orienteering. Of 20 Red course maps printed for the day, 19 were used! It was a shorter course than intended due to so many of its controls being removed, but a whole bunch of people decided to go for a Red course! It will likely NOT be half-flooded-out the next time you try one!

We updated our sign-in sheet to ask about adding your email to our mailing list, asking if OK to publish pictures on social media (images with or without names), and asking if you'd like to become a member of COO. If we have more members, we can add more events to our calendar. If you'd like to see MORE orienteering in the Central Ohio area, please think about joining Central Ohio Orienteers. It takes people to put on events! We meet about once per month.

Many thanks to everyone who helped out! Thanks to Todd for helping folks figure out which map was a good one for their group, to Nich for lending me a fresh Sharpie so I could edit the maps before people went on their courses, to Alan for getting people signed in and started on the White & Yellow courses, and to Michelle and Chiori for assisting with control pickup.

Next event is Saturday, April 25th, 2026, at Battelle Darby / Indian Ridge area. The entire Club hopes to see you next month, because we really like orienteering! Bring friends, too - it's always good to get outside!
